Early aviators relied on timepieces as flight instruments to aid in navigation and planning. The need to synchronize second hands with radio time signals and then coordinate these readings with compasses and flight charts was a daunting task. As onboard avionic instrumentation advanced and reliance on timepieces as backup instruments declined, pilots still found a need for their timepieces.
